Household journals

Life Books

A life calendar for the whole household: a bound journal for each person, a printed board for the wall and a private website for photographs.

An open Life Book at one week. The left page holds the seven days and a strip of the year’s fifty-two weeks. The right page holds ruled lines for writing and three small prompts.

The parts

  • The book

    A volume for each person

Each person keeps a bound book for the year. Its jacket shows the owner’s whole life in weeks, one row for each year. Every week has two facing pages: the days on the left, room to write on the right. A new volume follows each year.

  • The board

    A board for the wall

One printed board shows the household’s years at a glance. It hangs where everyone sees it every day.

  • The website

    A photograph for every week

Each week’s two pages carry a printed square. Scan it with a phone camera, and that page opens on lifebooks.family. A photograph taken there is filed to that week.

Principles

Paper and privacy

The paper record

The book is the master copy. The back of each book prints what a printer needs to make it again, with no server and no account.

Photographs

Each photograph starts visible only to the book’s owner. When the owner has no account, the people who write for them see it too. The owner chooses what the household sees. Other households never see it.

lifebooks.family

The site shows the books, the board and the weekly rhythm.
